I used to ask my students what was the greatest invention of the 20th Century. My answer was the Body Scanner as designed & developed by Sir Godfrey Hounsfield at THORN EMI.

Like all good inventions there is a list of parents. I shall give two which I feel are reasonably well documented:

  1. Alan Cormack (co winner of Nobel Prize)

2. Aaron Klug (1982 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his development of crystallographic electron microscopy)

He has a book too, which does not major on CAT-scanning and did good work on viruses.
